6L80 Transmission — About & HistoryThe 6L80 transmission was GM's solution to offering a replacement transmission for their 4L60, 4L70, 4L80, and 4L85 units. GM's goal was to provide an affordable, but updated automatic transmission to such icons as the TH400 or the 4L60. Developed for generation III vehicles with V8 engines, to include a variety of GM's vehicle line of Cadillacs, Corvettes, Camaros, and other SUVs and Trucks, the 6L80 was designed for vehicles with a gross weight of 14K pounds or those with a weight of up to 8,600 pounds.
The predecessor to the six-speed 6L80 was GM's four-speed, medium-duty 4L60E transmission. The 6L80 transmission, also medium-duty, was developed for vehicles that had increased horsepower. Produced in Michigan at GM's Ypsilanti manufacturing facility, the 6L80 employs direct clutch-to-clutch shifting and is absent of bands. The 6L80 benefits from having a deep 1st gear in that it has powerful starts from standing still.
Vehicles with the 6L80 transmission enjoy lower RPM and fuel consumption on the highway due to their tall overdrive gear. The input torque for a 6L80 transmission is 440 foot-pounds, while the 6L80's maximum output torque is an impressive 664 foot-pounds. Similar to the majority of transmissions manufactured by GM, the 6L80 Turbo-Hydramatic transmission has a capacity of between 10 to 12.6 quarts of Dextron VI fluid, dependent on the application. The 6L80 can use either a 258mm or 300mm torque converter. The 6L80 is ideally suited to complement GM's LS or LSX engines that are used in two-wheel drive applications. With a modular design, 6L80 transmissions remanufactured and sold by Certified Transmission have components that are common to the six-speed group of transmissions. All versions are easy to service as they have two output gear sets and use an input planetary gear set.
The 6L80 transmission for sale by Certified Transmission has features that range from driver shift control, a 32-bit internal control module, and an algorithmic performance braking system. With the module internal to the 6L80 transmission, this results in no additional installation requirements. The 6L80 enjoys great performance as its control module adjusts for ordinary wear & tear in the transmission's internal components and clutch plates.
When it comes to handling increased torque and horsepower with dependability, the 6L80E transmission does not disappoint. And unlike heavy-duty TH400 transmissions, the 6L80E weighs less and achieves more efficient fuel consumption for economical highway driving.
