5R55S TransmissionThe 5R55S transmission is a compact transmission that has 5 forward speeds with an overdrive. Similar to most 5 and 6-speed automatic transmissions, the 5R55S has a very low first gear. Thereafter the gear spread is pretty standard. The first gear features a 3.22:1 ratio. This is much better than any other automatic transmission preceding it.

The 5R55S's roots date back to 2003 when it first saw life in the Thunderbird. The 5R55N and 5R55W are the predecessors to the 5R55S. The series was part of the new generation of electronically controlled transmissions that were offered by the Ford Motor Company for various passenger vehicles in 1995.
