5R110W TransmissionThe 5R110W "TorqShift" is often described as a redesign of Ford's 4R100 transmission and was first introduced for the 2003 model year for the Power Stroke 6.0L diesel engine. The "Torqshift" is specific for the diesel engine integrates closely to the functionality of the engine. The 5R110W continued being used when the 6.4L Power Stroke was introduced for the 2008 model year but was not offered when the 6.7L Power Stroke was offered in 2011. The 2011 6.7L Power Stroke instead offered a superior 6R140 TorqShift transmission. Although being advertised as a 5-speed transmission, in all actuality the 5R110W TorqShift features 6 forward speeds. When operating under normal conditions, the 5R110W shifts 1st-2nd-3rd-5th-6th, and another sequence of 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-6th is implemented when the ambient temperature falls below 5°. The 4th gear is primarily used in colder weather which forces higher engine speeds in assisting the engine/transmission to achieve normal operating temperatures in a shorter amount of time.
