4L60E TransmissionThe 4L60E (as well as the similar 4L65-E) belongs to a series of automatic transmissions that were manufactured by the General Motors company. The 4L60E transmission incorporates 4 forward gears, 1 reverse gear, and was designed for engine configurations of a longitudinal orientation. The 4L60E evolved from the 700R4 Turbo-Hydramatic transmission that was first manufactured in 1982.
Both the 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions are manufactured in Toledo Ohio at Toledo Transmission, Romulus Michigan at Romulus Transmission, and in Ramos Arizpe Mexico. The primary difference between the 4L60E and the 4L65E is that the former uses a 6.5" depth bell housing while the latter a 7\" depth bell housing. Both units also have input shafts and torque convert that vary from one another. The 4L60s use an input shaft that is 298mm while the 4L65 (and 4L70) series uses a 300mm input shaft as well as converters developed for LS applications only.
Originally known as the THM700, the 4L60 was renamed to conform to GM's typical naming convention after the electronic 4L60E version was introduced, happening in 1993 for vans, SUVs, and trucks, and 1994 for rear-wheel passenger cars. Bolt-on bell housing and six-bolt tail housing were introduced in 1996 for S-10 Trucks and S-10 Blazers and in 1998 for remaining applications. Starting in 1998, 300mm styled input shafts, 300mm styled pumps, and a new 300mm torque converter with higher-capacity internals were installed on vehicles that were coupled with a Gen III Small Block. Weighing 133 pounds (without oil), the 4L60E has a rating for handling up to 360 ft·lbf of torque.
